Photo Analysis

Sprigg's AI photo analysis lets you snap a photo of your lawn and get an instant expert diagnosis. Upload a photo to the Photo Journal, tap Analyze, and receive a health score, disease detection, weed identification, bare spot assessment, and color analysis — all tailored to your grass type and climate zone.

Photo Journal

The Photo Journal is your lawn's visual timeline. It stores all your uploaded photos in a chronological grid, each tagged with a timestamp and health score badge when analyzed.

To upload a photo:

  1. Navigate to the Photo Journal from the main navigation
  2. Click Upload and select a photo from your device
  3. Optionally add a note describing what you're seeing
  4. The photo is uploaded and appears in your journal

Photos are displayed in a responsive grid with color-coded health score badges — green for healthy (70+), amber for fair (40-69), and red for poor (below 40). Click any photo to open it in a lightbox view with its full analysis results.

Running an Analysis

After uploading a photo, tap the Analyze button to run AI photo analysis. Sprigg sends your image to Claude's vision model along with your property context (grass type, USDA zone, and region) for a diagnosis tailored to your lawn.

Analysis typically completes in a few seconds. Results are saved permanently so you can review them anytime by clicking on the photo in your journal.

Tip: Photo analysis uses your property's grass type and USDA zone for context-aware diagnosis. Make sure your property settings are accurate for the best results.

Analysis Results

Each analysis returns a structured report with the following sections:

Health Score

An overall score from 0-100 reflecting the visible health of your lawn in the photo:

Score RangeRatingDescription
90-100ExcellentLawn looks outstanding — dense, uniform, vibrant color
70-89GoodHealthy overall with minor issues
50-69FairNoticeable problems that need attention
30-49PoorSignificant issues — action recommended
0-29CriticalSevere damage or stress — immediate care needed

If the image isn't a photo of a lawn, the analysis will indicate that it couldn't assess lawn health.

Disease Detection

The AI identifies potential fungal diseases visible in the photo. For each detected disease, you'll see:

  • Disease name — e.g., Brown Patch, Dollar Spot, Gray Leaf Spot
  • Confidence level — How certain the AI is about the identification
  • Severity — How advanced the disease appears
  • Recommendations — Suggested next steps for treatment

Weed Identification

Common lawn weeds are identified with:

  • Weed name — e.g., crabgrass, dandelion, clover
  • Confidence level — How certain the AI is about the identification
  • Recommendations — Control methods and timing

Bare Spot Assessment

If bare or thin areas are visible, the analysis reports:

  • Severity — How extensive the bare spots are
  • Recommendations — Steps to repair and fill in the area

Color Analysis

A general assessment of your lawn's color characteristics:

  • Dominant color — The primary color of the turf
  • Uniformity — How consistent the color is across the lawn
  • Description — Context about what the color indicates

Auto-resizeImages are automatically resized client-side before upload (max 2048px) and before analysis (max 1568px) to optimize processing

Plan Limits

Photo analysis is available on qualifying plans. The number of analyses you can run per month depends on your plan tier. Your current usage is tracked automatically — when you approach your monthly limit, you'll see a notification.

Note: Photo uploads are separate from photo analyses. You can upload and store as many photos as you like — the monthly limit applies only to running AI analysis on them.

Tips for Better Results

  • Good lighting — Natural daylight produces the most accurate analysis. Avoid harsh shadows or overexposed photos.
  • Get close — For disease or weed identification, take close-up photos of the affected area so the AI can see detail.
  • Show context — For overall health scores, include a wider shot that shows a representative section of your lawn.
  • Multiple angles — If you're concerned about a specific issue, upload several photos from different angles and distances.
  • Add notes — Describe what you're seeing when you upload — this context is available alongside your photos for reference.
Important: Photo analysis provides AI-generated assessments based on visual inspection. For confirmed disease diagnosis or treatment plans, consult a local lawn care professional or your university extension office.
